STAINS
Ceramic stains are blends of various metal oxides and refractories which have been fired to develop their colour then milled to powder. The powder colour indicates the fired colour. Stains may be added to clay bodies, slips, engobes or glazes. A maximum temperature is indicated with each stain. Beyond this colour may fade. Below this colour is stable. Some glazes contain ingredients incompatible with some stains. Always test the stain for your situation. THE NEED FOR FLUX To ensure good adhesion to the clay body, preventing peeling or rough surfaces, most stains require the addition of a flux to compensate for their refractory nature. Additions of 10% - 15% flux is adequate. Recommended fluxes are Glaze Frits 4064,4108,4124,4113 or 4131. To select the appropriate frit read the data attached with each frit. An exception is Cobalt Blue, no flux is needed for this stain.
